One way is to find an RPM package and use alien to convert it to a
deb. If you take this route, you may have to force dependancy checks.
As I'm sure you are aware, [K]ubuntu is not set up for source program
development out of the box. if you're building from source, you need
the build-essential meta package and probably the kernel headers as
well, and there may be KDE and QT development packages as well.. Be
sure to put the binary packages in /opt or /usr/local to avoid
polluting your deb database.
Also, pass your requests on to Ubuntu for future inclusion in the repositories.
