I have this thing installed and am now wondering what is the best way to add 
packages that aren't (apparently) in the apt-get repositories....

I was using a handy editor called  'e3'  under SuSE  (yes, I know enough vi to 
get me by)  but it's not there under the standard lists.

Also some other things I use:   the,  regina,  ncftp     and the like.

I know where to get these from their home source, as tar balls, but there must 
be a better way.
