It's not just, you Llama.
Until such time as AMD cleans out the Augean stables, I wouldn't touch
ATI with a long pitch fork, unless to pitch the card entirely. Why it
was only 8-12 months ago when ATI couldn't even get their drivers to
work, and people were posting on Linux Today that they were reverting
to Windows because their ATI cards wouldn't work on Linux.
More currently: we still get regular lockups on our HP AMD boxes with
built in ATI card doing simple things like switching consoles, logging
out from KDE, and running certain screensavers.
I have relatively little experience with nVidia, and thus I can't help
with card selection, but I've never had a lick of trouble with nVidia
on Ubuntu. OTOH, some of the ManDrivel based LiveCD distros won't even
install using my nVidia card.
