It, like any webmail I've seen, needs access to an IMAP server.

One of the things I like about IMP (http://www.horde.org) is that it has
the abilitity to access more than one IMAP server and/or to access the same
server using different domains when sending messages.

IMP can be configured on a per-server basis to use straight imap on port
143 or tmaps on port 993 using tls with signed or unsigned certificates.
