I don't know what Redhat defaults to. The most comprehensive desktop is
probably KDE, (kubuntu was mentioned, which uses kde, as does Kanotix).
Gnome is the default in Ubuntu, and is quite popular. Xfce is another
good choice, very quick, but will probably require some setup. There are
also several lightweight window managers available, blackbox, fluxbox,
openbox, windowmaker, enlightenment, etc.
I would recommend you download Kanotix, which is a very up to date
debian based single disk distro, which is a live cd and can easily be
installed to hard drive. If you install it you can quite easily install
various desktops to try.
