Rick,
I've been running three servers with Debian "pure64" AMD64 for just under a
year, now, and follow the AMD64 mailing list. Apparently, out of the
thousands of available Debian packages only some 200 or so will not compile
or run as 64-bit binaries. Unfortunately, OO.org, Wine & Flash are among
those. :-(
Ubuntu, Suse & (I guess) RedHat get around this by engineering their own,
multi-architecture systems, including both 32-bit & 64-bit libraries and
running the problem applications as 32-bit app's. By the time that everyone
can agree upon a true, standard multi-arch system design, most of those
remaining programs probably will have been fixed and the question will be
moot.
Cheers!
