You're probably right. There is little common ground for purists and
non-purists. It would just become a flame fest.

I'm happy to hear that. Without belaboring the point, Ubuntu is
attracting a class of users that haven't a clue about docs, man,
archives, etc., and most people on the forums are trying to steer them
in the right direction without being too snooty about it. I give them
kudos for hosting an Absolute Newbies forum.
And of course the clincher, for me, is that Ubuntu doesn't feel
compelled to code GNU bloody Linux half a dozen times on every page of
their documentation <grin>.
