Can recompiling your kernel lead to speed improvements

That's funny, as I've never had a single problem building a kernel.org 
kernel in RHEL, FC, Debian, or SuSE.  Ubuntu on the other hand was a 
nightmare of broken toolchains.  Apparently developers aren't human 
beings.
