I've used the same camera (my brothers')  I've had no problems getting
the pics from it using gphoto2 and digikam. what does:

gphoto2 --auto-detect

 This will show what gphoto thinks it is.
Also when in digikam there are several drop-down submenu did you actually get to the root? One other thought, did you select other than ptp on initial camera setup? I used defaults when first turned on his camera (out of the box)I changed nothing. It just works.
