USB 1.0 or 2.0 on the USB ports?

I may guess it could be some sort of Power issue.

USB has a max voltage of 500MA, while USB 2 has 1500MA.
However, that could be divided amongst the USB ports.

I have already ran into this with a USB 2.0 2.5 disk case.
Works fine on my 2.8XP MSI MB, with Linux, but when plugged
into a GigaByte 2.4XP, did not work. A 3.5 Belkin with external
power supply worked fine as did several USB dongle drives on
the GigaByte MB.

Turned out, once I attached the external power adapter to the 2.5,
everything worked as it should. Strange, though, was the external
power supply adapter was USB based.
