I don't think of commercial products as being necessarily evil
(particularly compared to government actions :-), but my experience with
database vendors is that have had very unrealistic, if not extortionate,
pricing models.

There was a time when DB vendors like Unify, Informix, and Progress based
their pricing on the type of CPU.  This often meant that replacing old
hardware with newer doing identical work would double the yearly licensing
fees even though it was supporting the same number of users and work.

The biggest problems I have with commercial software for mission critical
applications is that I've seen far too many of the software vendors go out
of business or get assimilated by the Redmond Raptor killing their
Unix/Linux offerings.  The other problem I've found with most commercial
accounting applications is that they're really not very good at their jobs.
