Change always comes with a cost - a trade-off too. But Microsoft is known for
making changes just for the sake of $'s in upgrades so the cost is there
either way. But at least with an Open standard you wouldn't be tied to one
vendor and you'd have all the knowledge about what you are using.

Sure, let Microsoft provide full details of all of their file formats and then
this might not be an issue.

Note: James Prendergast is director for "Americans for Technology Leadership"
which has a webpage (http://www.techleadership.org/about/) but strangely no
email address for contacting them. I suspect James P. may be the only
member but I note that support for the organization comes from:

    * Association for Competitive Technology
    * Citizens Against Government Waste
    * Cityscape Filmworks
    * Clarity Consulting
    * CompTIA
    * CompUSA
    * Microsoft Corporation
    * 60Plus Association
    * Small Business Survival Committee
    * Staples, Inc.

No surprises there.
