remote desktop access

I have installed the NX/freeNX stuff and can make a connection between
two machines. For the client I have used both nxclient and knx.

What I do not seem to get sorted is when there is a machine between. The
external machine must communicate on port 22 (the firewall allows this
port). I must be missing the obvious here. To say that I 'just need an
ssh connection' is nice, but it is not fully up to me: it is what
programs like nxclient want.

Missing the obvious here...
