i don't use mencoder for dvd's at all.  I use transcode to do the 
encoding with the dvdrip GUI front end.  Sometimes if i'm in a rush 
(like needing to return the DVD to the library), i'll rip the entire DVD 
image to disk with good ole 'dd' and then use dvdrip later, on the 
loopback mounted DVD image.

One thing to keep in mind if you're going to use dd to rip a DVD image 
is that you ened to play the DVD first with either xine or mplayer to 
crack the CSS keys or dd will choke.
