converting VHS to digital

Hey Llama,
What command line do you use to rip and encode a DVD in mencoder?
I'm trying to learn the mencoder side of things a bit.  It seems pretty 
powerful, but just as cryptic as transcode... and I haven't found as good of 
documentation yet...  Nothing like sticking the man page for both mplayer and 
mencoder together!
