Actually the HP printers are designed so that the heads don't
clog after long periods of no use.  I've had a Photosmart 7350
for several years now that gets used once or twice a month, and
has never had problems (my ten year old HP 4M Plus gets used for
most printing, and the HP only for color).

On the other hand, I had a fair bit of difficulty getting the HP
to work properly under various Caldera and SuSE releases from
8.x, and switched it over to a Mac a couple of years ago using
HP's own drivers.

It's been my experience that Epson printers are probably the best
supported under Linux.
