It must be Ubuntu. I'm using regular Debian Sarge & GRUB. When I install GRUB 
or run update-grub (a Debian supplied shell script) it creates/updates a 
straight forward /boot/grub/menu.lst file. (For what it's worth, I never 
could get GRUB to recognize the grub.conf file.)
