I have a history with this. Slow fans kill boxen. Actually, mine
would stop, and so would the processor. But if it's running hot,
there's a great chance for inconsistency in many different ways.
Worse yet, this issue may truly be a corrupt filesystem, perhaps
caused by overheating while writing critical FS information.

FWIW, I've been running this new kernel on my boxen without any
issues. In cases where hardware is going bad, I'll notice it when the
system is under load... which dpkg and apt-get tend to cause.
