That worked and running Knoppix under the 2.4 kernel no less. The .iso 
file is at 3.5GB and climbing. All it took per the above link supplied 
by Tim was to add the 'lfs' option to mount thusly:

mount -t smbfs -o lfs //server/share /mnt/point

So it's a Samba feature.

That's worth remembering. Still wonder why man mount or man smbmount did 
not reveal such a secret.
