I don't have an nvidia card any more, but here are some things to try:
1. Upgrade to a later kernel (2.6.9) and reinstall your nvidia modules?
2. Downgrade a level or two on your nvidia modules?
3. If you're using framebuffer, very few modes will work with nvidia
and 2.6.x. Google for info.> I've given up (for now) on 3d with

The simplest way would be to disable the gui login (don't remember the
runlevels on debian; on the old standard, use runlevel 3 rather than 4
or 5. Then you can login and use startx to bring up your X system
(swap out the config files manually, or do some automated crap).

It would be a really good thing (tm) if nvidia knew what they were
doing in constructing kernel modules.
