upgrading glibc on COL 3.1

I was trying to follow the sxs article written by Mr. Bandel on 
"Upgrading Glibc". I hit the following error with ./configure:

compiler support for __thread is required

I tried optiosn "--without-__thread --without-sanity-checks", it still 
comes to no avail.

my gcc compiler has been built with "--enabled-threads=POSIX".

Any help would be appreciated!
