Not to kindle any flame wars, but the attractions IMHO are:

1. I am relieved of the need to tinker with any sort of POP3 or IMAP
software on my system.
2. Like with IMAP, I can get to my mail from anywhere that runs a
supported browser.
3. Also, I don't need to tinker with any SPAM software on my system.
Gmail does an excellent job of isolating spam to a folder where I can
review and whack it. There are damn few misses (it learns quickly when
I report a missed spam) and even fewer false hits.

The drawbacks are:

1. Gmail is not always smart enough to generate a reply to the list in
every case. Depending on the headers, I may get list, both list and
sender, or sender only, but most of the time it works.
