I think this is what it is. Not something I use.

More like VMware and Wine... That is, win4lin requires (and manages your
doing) a complete install of 98 or ME in a Linux directory. It runs
Windows as a Linux process. It can run in it's own virtual terminal or
in an X window which then allows cut and paste between Linux and Windows
apps. When running in an X window, it installs a display driver in your
Windows install to allow this. Actually works very well.
It basically intercepts some device accesses. But programs run as they
would on a 'pure' windows box. It is not an emulation, I even do a
Windows update from IE. It does not know it is all somewhere in a Linux
process. VMware, OTOH, runs Linux and Windows side by side, no?

Better in that most all Windows apps run. Even some DirectX games now
run. This is because Windows as delivered from MS is still running and
controlling your app. Wine/crossover replace windows dlls with their
own, eliminating the need for Windows. Of course, wine lets you use
original windows dll as well, but the Windows environment is simply not
there.
If Win4lin has any drawback,it is that it cannot run NT or its
derivatives, like XP. It is not that I want XP, but I want XP apps like
iTunes.
