Gimp backups?

Greetings,
I was just editing some graphics tonight when Gimp began acting "odd"
(i.e. Using the Move tool and only an outline of the object moved, but not
its insides).

Thought to myself, that's odd, I should probably save my work and try
this again later. When suddenly, POOF! Gimp died and the window went
away! Of course, before I could tell it to save my work.

   Question is this:
Does Gimp periodically save the work in a backup file?
If so, where is this backup file kept?

I'm afraid to restart Gimp at this point just in case I *can* recover
an automated backup. I don't want to delete or overwrite anything.

   Thanks!
