IDE messages I'm not seeing in syslog

I don't know why these aren't showing up in your system logs. As for
dmesg, it is a ring buffer maintained by the kernel, so it doesn't
necessarily contain only the boot messages. I would think you could
edit /etc/syslog.conf to fix what I can only describe as an apparently
broken syslog setup.
