Joining an NT Domain

Hi all,

I have this really strange problem right now. I'm trying to join a
Fedora Core 4 computer to a Windows NT domain (Note: NT domain, not
Active Directory. No AD servers on my network, and yes, I know that
support for NT servers has expired -- but that is a whole other
story;)). I'm running Winbind and Samba 3.x and I followed instructions
from all over the Internet. Seems like there is a lot of variation in
the articles I found. Some mentioned that Winbind is needed and some
provide instructions for a Samba-only configuration. As far as I can
determine, these are the steps:

1. Edit /etc/nsswitch.conf to allow winbind authentication
2. Edit smb.conf to specify joining a NT domain
3. Run samba and winbind and try to join the domain manually, using "net
join" command

I got as far as step 3. The funny thing is, my computer shows up under
Network Neighbourhood, but I am unable to join the domain manually using
the "net join" command. The errors say something like "no such user",
even though I am joining using Administrator. The errors are on my
computer at work, so I can't provide the actual output. If it helps, I
can post up the required setup files (nsswitch.conf, smb.conf and
anything else that may help).

Has anybody had any success with getting a Linux computer to join a NT
Domain? I've actually seen it with a laptop running Suse, but I can't
find any article on Fedora Core that can help.

Lonni, I seem to remember you asking the same question some weeks back.
Were you able to solve your difficulties?

Thanks in advance,
pascal chong
