I believe Mepis will also use the standard sources, (guaranteed
compatibility? maybe not) but they recommend NOT to do an apt-get
dist-upgrade, just stick to apt-get upgrade, since if you dist-upgrade
you may no longer have mepis, just debian. They have forums you could
have a look at. I installed it, (v.2004.01) a couple of days ago and
bombed it trying to use gnome config tools, but the install is a breeze,
(too easy), but only installs kde for a wm. I did a apt-get update
apt-get upgrade, then apt-get install gnome, and a nicely configured
version of gnome 2.6 installed without problem, I assume from debian
sources. I haven't tried the nvidia stuff yet, just the nv driver.
I like debian, and have been using libranet for years, and mepis seems
like a good debian based distro. I'm waiting for Libranet 3.0 to come
out. I very much recommend libranet, but v.2.8.1 is a bit dated now.
Mepis optionally runs kernel 2.6.7.
