kernel 2.6.9 and the nvidia video driver

fyi:
I'm running debian versions/offshoots (debian 3.0, ubuntu, mepis) and I 
have had no problem installing the nvidia drivers from .debs,. The 
kernel is 2.6.8.1 in ubuntu, and 2.6.7 in the others, I believe.
