kernel 2.6.9 and the nvidia video driver

Apart from the cd burning problem (cdrecord won't work for normal users, 
see other recent threads on this list) which still continues for me 
after upgrading to 2.6.9, I experienced a new one: I can't install the 
nvidia video driver any longer. After some googling this turned out to 
be a known issue:

I didn't want to apply the proposed kernel patches, but I found another 
"solution":

which, alas, didn't work for me as well. So I went back to the xorg 
driver and wait until nvidia.com offers a new one.
