Quite so. I mangled the command line, but I only discovered that I had after
building the drivers into the kernel, including probably unnecessary
SCSI stuff. The proper kernel command line *should* be:
ide-cd=/dev/hdX
replacing ``X'' with the appropriate letter. Thus:
ide-cd=/dev/hdd

I'm dense, I suppose. It wouldn't be the first time. I'm also stubborn, so
I think I have this worked out:
# cdrecord -scanbus
