cdrecord fails on 2.6.8+ kernels [was thunderbird]

Well, this gets curiouser by the minute. I just upgraded my laptop to
the latest 2.6.9-rc4, and burning a cd is no problem! Same versions of
cdrtools, glibc (both have nptl), and gcc on my desktop system, but
different results. Different writers, of course. The laptop has a
DVD/CDRW, and the desktop has a plain ole CDRW.

This is maddening!
