OK, suspicions confirmed, deprecated != broken for ide-scsi. More to
the point, I thought I had read that ATAPI support was also
deprecated, and on my systems I can't find any version of cdrtools
and/or 2.6.8+ kernel that produces anything other than a total system
hang. I'm keeping 2.6.7 on thisl aptop so that I can burn without any
problems.

In contrast to what was said a few emails earlier, the patch which we
were discussing is in my kernels and cdrecord still does not work with
ATAPI. From earlier strace output, I could see (sometimes I could
capture this before the hang) that the hang always occurred on the
second I/O request issued to the device (dev=ATAPI:0,0 in my case).
