Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong webcam, but wasn't there an issue with 
some proprietary code that required a patch in the kernel that would 
hook to that code. Then because of GPL that hook was removed from the 
kernel. Your aplication might still work but You might have to aquire 
that bit of code. I use to have that post saved but alas have since 
deleted  it. Something to look into.
