argh, grub woes

Nothing has changed, other than me upgrading from FC2 to FC3.  I'm able 
to boot into FC3 if i manually enter the root, kernel & initrd lines at 
the grub> prompt.

If i attempt to run:
grub-install /dev/hda

I see:
/dev/hda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

My device.map file only has an entry for:
(fd0)	/dev/fd0

could that be the problem?
