argh, grub woes

Sounds like you tried   root  (hd0,2)     and that wouldn't be right.

root (hd0,0)    should point to your /boot  partition
kernel /vmlinuz.......  root=/dev/hda3    would be right
initrd /initrd.....   for the current initrd.

Sounds like you should boot knoppix and do a re-install of grub.  When it gets 
stuck on stage1 it really can't find all of its part....   Have you changed 
partitions since grub was first installed?
