Well, I searched a bit the archives of the checkinstall users list. 
Segfaulting on fc2 seems to be a known issue. It has been proposed to 
use checkinstall-1.6.0beta3 and apply this patch:

I did so and got a checkinstall binary which at least doesn't segfault, 
and which seems to be working properly at least on my test candidates: 
the alsa packages and, of course, checkinstall itself.
