StarOffice slow on sorting slides

In case you are thinking about using SO/OO to sort color
slides, say from a digital camera, forget it.

I find that in the slide sorter view SO is incredibly slow to repaint
the screen after a slide is moved. Things I have tried include:
1. Linking, not embedding photos.
2. Increasing memory usage for S0.
3. Changing the view quality.
4. Reducing the image file size from 800,000 to 30,000 bytes by:
	a. Decreasing the image size to 800x600 from 1600x1200.
	b. Reducing jpeg image quality to 40% or less.

I am out of ideas. I posted this problem to the openoffice
forum, both in the impress and the writer sections. Not
a single response. I must assume there is no fix.

I would like to know if anybody on this list is using SO/OO
for making presentations of color slides? Exporting the
presentation to html or pdf works fine, but the problem
is sorting and editing the slides in SO/OO.

I was working (at work) with Powerpoint yesterday,
and had a presentation of 700 color slides, each about
800,000 bytes (linked, not embedded), which was working
OK. With SO/OO, the limit is about 15-30 slides before
the delay is impossible. Powerpoint is so quick, I find
I can install a Powerpoint presentation in every one of
my picture directories, and with a simple import by link
macro, I can use these presentations to view and sort
the slides in the directory, make annotations, edits,
etc. all the while the originals are unchanged. I really
wish I could do this with SO/OO.

I tried Koffice, but couldn't find a slide sorter view.

So, my advice is never advocate SO/OO at work unless you
have checked out every single function you will need,
in great detail. You never know what kind of silly show
stopper will turn up.
