There's this thing that I use called Crossover Office which is a patched 
and cleaned-up "front end" for wine which is guaranteed (supported) to 
run M$ office suite (including IE) apps like Word, Excel, etc. and also 
runs, without guarantees, a bunch of other Windows apps with varying 
success.  It's not free, but you'll otherwise easily spend the 50 bucks 
US in time getting all of the necessary dll files and other stuff in 
the proper places so that wine will act as it's supposed to.
IMHO.
