OpenOffice and Decorative Fonts

I sent this query to Gentoo some time ago (2/20) but got no response, so
I'll try again here.

Is there a way to add the appropriate information to
font libraries like freefont to use the fonts for screen and printing. 
As the font library is supplied, only *.pfb files exist.  You can run
'printafm font.pfb > font.afm' for each file, and OpenOffice writer will
let you select them for inclusion in a document, but if you try to print
them the result is pretty much garbage - no resemblance to the images on
screen.
