IM stands for Instant Messaging..... I'm not sure in a business sense what
you would use it for but it's hilarious if your the admin with a chat
sniffer on the network.

It is one of the most inefficient forms of communication known to human
kind. Whereby a person types a message to another person in realtime....

It has some interesting uses:

People in bad relationships have found they can be emotionally unfaithful
to their current spouse while in the comfort of their own homes.

If you have problems with intimacy then you can form a 'relationship' with
someone you are never likely to meet thereby avoiding the whole issue.

You can misrepresent yourself just so someone will chat to you, it's
interesting to find out what another person's definition of 'I look like
halle berry' can be.

on the plus side:

You can keep in touch with family on the other side of the world.

It can improve your typing skills
