I found the culprit - though I don't get why it interfered with printing.  
I'll skip the rigamarole except to say that it took a couple of (cough, 
cough) reboots to discover that the problem is one 3-page file in textmaker - 
only the first two pages print, then nothing else prints.   I avoid that file 
and everything prints now.  Anyone with any idea why a .tmd file would mess 
up CUPS?

Oh, well - lost a file but saved me a CD session and an unbillable trek to the 
nearest print shop.  Thanks to all who tried to help.
