No doubt, as I think it is the interpretation of the PS file and not the
generation of the printer file that is the problem. I have had an Epson and
an HP and a PDF file as the target, all with failures.

Not same as here. The PS file cannot be handled by EPS ghostscript. And thus
not printed. Since your 'gs' works, I am surprised at your results. Do you
have two ghostscripts installed? Otherwise the command that failed (above)
is not so very different from the one CUPS does when you print from Acrobat.
They should both fail. Unless you have more than one.
