i agree with your conclusion, but the failures i mentioned both took
place with the machine hooked up to a honking big ibm ups, as it has
been for ages. indeed, when we had the blackout last august i was the
only kid on the block who was able to a nice orderly shutdown. (after
which i turned off the ups -- the damned beeping was about to drive me
to acts of violence!)
