The desire of virtually any company is to have no competition and hence 
a free reign on income generation.

If you control the 'standard' then you control the possible future 
income from it's use. Every time a quasi standard comes up then it's 
always a battle to take ownership to ensure future profits. Hence the 
mirriad of 'standards' with 'microsoft extensions'.

Sheesh sorry guys I don't seem to be saying anything new here.... darn I 
wish I had some more insights.
