backup advice sought

   Would not it be best to do a dvd type backup of your total system, then periodic
backup of just newly created data file & /etc files. As I understand the dvd have a
rather large capacity. Something like the Optical backup systems that larger
corporations use.  Actually come to think of it we all might look at something of this
nature. After I finishe the degree in late summer, I will start a project of this
type, I need it as well. Now I know some do not like GUI, but I do, using wxWindows
and maybe ammanda something could be developed quickly. This is not in your current
time frame, I realize.
