KDE file browser question: ?Thumbnails

I am not sure I  understand the question.  running gentoo with kde 3.1.4 and 
using the "home" icon (kfmclient openProfile filemanagement), I get thumbnails 
for the images in the directory.  Are you wanting the system to create 
thumbnails of what is in a directory and store the thumbnails in another 
directory?  (That would seem to me to be a *HUGE* PITA to keep everything up 
to date and synced.)
