new happenings with my ACER Athlon laptop freeze problems

For those who follow this (my laptop shutdown/virtual terminal woes -
posted a few weeks back), there has been a new development.

The popular wisdom was that my display driver was at fault. Suspect was
nvidia. Well, I do not use nvidia drivers as it is some via chip.

Well, I was playing with SUSE 9's laptop control thinggie and thought I
would try doing a suspend. I expected the system to stop dead as always.

Nope. Instead, the system shutdown ALL THE WAY, and then rebooted. Now,
whenever I shut down the computer, it does a shutdown and reboots. OK, it is
not exactly what was asked for, but a clean shutdown is better than one that
freezes, even if I need to press the power button to stop the reboot.

Even more odd. I can now do virtual terminal switches until the bovine
reemerge. No freezes.

All because I did one suspend.
