email trimming - sort of

I use Courier IMAP to store and manage my e-mail, and Sylpheed or Evolution
to access it. I keep most all message sent to and received from customers. I
see that my e-mail storage is bigger than I would like because I often send
and receive mails with large attachments.

What I am looking for is something to remove attachments from messages,
keeping the messages. I would even be happy if the attachments were put in a
disk file and the attachment replaced with a reference. Eudora does this on
Windows (whether you like it or not). I want to be able to do this
optionally on a message-by-message basis. Anyone ever come across such a
tool? BTW, Courier keeps the messages in separate files.

A Google search (probably not well formed) takes me into the land of viri
software. Probably not unrelated, but I don't want a Windows solution.
