No. You 'select' with the left mouse button just like you would anywhere
else (hold left button and drag pointer over whatever you want to
select). Then use the middle button to paste. It will be pasted at the
command prompt location.
3-button emulation as it is called (where both buttons together emulate
the middle button) is turned on or off in XFree. If you have a 5-button
mouse, then you probably should not have 3-button emulation turned on.

konsole is a quite friendly and gui-ish console/term program. If you're
running kde, it's the favored choice. It has the normal 'edit' functions
available on the menu as well as some other things like multiple
sessions via tabs. xterm, by comparison, looks rather crude.
