If it's not inappropriate to ask, why are you doing a trial of RH8? It
is 2 (almost 3) versions old now. And Red Hat 8 wasn't the most stable
release they ever produced. RH9 is far better. For the most part, the
XFree supplied ATI Radeon driver should work fine. I'd try it rather
than just thinking the choice is between either vesa or the closed ATI
binary drivers.
